Ben Askren Shares his Health Update on Instagram After his Double Lung Transplant
Former MMA star Ben Askren recently opened up about a serious health scare that nearly cost him his life. In a video shared from his hospital bed, the 40-year-old fighter revealed he had undergone a double lung transplant after falling seriously ill with pneumonia.
Askren said he was unconscious for more than a month and doesn’t remember anything from late May through early July. During that time, his heart reportedly stopped several times. “It’s wild to think about. I don’t even remember any of it,” he said while thanking his wife, Amy, for keeping a journal of the events.

He lost near 50 pounds before and now weighs only 147 pounds — something he said was not happened since he was a kid. Askren appeared in good spirits and said he is slowly building his strength back.
“I’m really thankful to still be here,” he shared. “It’s been tough on my whole family, but we’re pushing through.”
Askren, who had a successful MMA career in Bellator, ONE Championship, and the UFC, is best known for his wrestling background and calm, straightforward personality. He retired from MMA in year 2019 but he made headlines in 2021 after a boxing match with youtuber and boxer Jake Paul.
Jake Paul showed public support, calling Askren “one of the toughest fighters of all time” in his social media post.
Now focused on recovery, Askren says he’s more motivated than ever to give back and help others however he can. “I’ll share more of the full story later,” he said, “but I just wanted everyone to know I’m still here, and I appreciate all the love.”
